I loved today's fundraiser. It was for such a great cause.

The weather was great and money was well spent as I won the bid for this signed NSW Waratahs ball.

That's me below, dressing for the occasion, it is still early Spring in Sydney, with the temperature at about 27 degrees Celsius today.

Deconstructing the outfit:

Charcoal suit - suits the daytime event, allows the individual to add personality through a coloured/patterned shirt or tie;
Light blue shirt - the colour matches the weather, the stripes is a playful mixture of fun/work;
Pocket square - my choice of accessory today, a way of summing up the outfit
Hemming - A fresh trip to the tailors recently left me with two more suits of mine which have been tailored so that there is no trouser break (excellent option for those light coloured suits or those suits which are more suited to the warmer weather).

Brylcreem; oh how I got so used to see you in my grandfather's bathroom. Unfortunately my hair is ridiculously thick which is why with me, Brylcreem is always replaced with all sorts of moulding clays and finishing pastes, depending on how polished of a look am I going for.

At the end of the day, this post is not about hair product, but on grooming, specifically with regards to the use of the male hairbrush.

Functions of a Hairbrush should be to:

a) Untangle the hair

b) keeping hair clean of dust, dirt and dandruff (i.e. in the military, where the male hairbrush gained notoriety)

c) "keep the hair looking good by distributing the natural fats that accumulate at the roots all the way to the hair ends" - Roetzel (2004)

I picked up this bag last year at a Paul Smith sale, as you can see it's quite a classic bag made of vinyl with emerald leather detailing.

Anyone know more about this bag? I know it's most likely from the 2009 collection, maybe even 2008? Would love to find out its proper product name and such. I remember a few weeks after I bought this, I went into David Jones and saw this bag (beige detailing instead of emerald) with a hefty price tag! Lucky me!

So It's been a while since my last post, and I am very happy to say that since then this blog has turned 1! What an amazing achievement! Profile views currently sit at 1181 but would love for a lot more readers to click on the 'following' link to show more support!

Tonight what I have for you is my outfit from my sister's birthday dinner. A play on the monochromes with a bit of shimmer:

The Male Umbrella Style Icons (July)

It has come to my attention that Russh Magazine's latest issue (Australia) has a one page spread of Colin Firth's character and his style in 'A Single Man', why it is hidden away in a Women's magazine, I will never know! I realise that although it is an awesome reference point for Men, its flaws are apparent through the lack of attention to detail. Lack of attention you say? Where?

Going under the microscope I think we'll start with the tie. Colin as 'George Falconer' in the film writes down "tie in Windsor knot here", the one above is some sort of schoolboy knot. The silver skinny isn't really true to the character's style either! He was a Professor remember! His Sartorial flair came from his choice in his evening blazer, and pocket squares.
The blazer featured has a Shawl collar, and although when worn today, it's stylish as hell, Colin Firth did not wear one in the movie! A traditional two-buttoned navy blazer was enough for him, if they wanted to update it in the editorial for todays' Gentleman, why not have a play with texture? Put up a velvet jacket instead!
His suit was brown, not black! This is important because both colours have very distinct forms and conventions.
Perhaps this last point is the one I've been so worked up about, only because lately it's featured heavily in my outfits as of late: the tie bar. Every Gentleman needs one, so in an editorial about style, why are certain elements of it missing?

Lionfest 2010 (Sydney, Australia)

Yesterday I attended Lionfest 2010, an event that showcased many performances from various martial arts (primarily Kung Fu) schools. Lion Dancing, of course was to be the main focus of the day. This ancient Chinese sport continues to feature regularly in festivals and events all around the world, it's definitely had a huge presence in my life, which is why in the pictures of today's post I will try and convey to you the happiness which the Lion tends to bring to everyday life.

The symbolism of the Lion for this particular post is the modern day Gentleman, charming and stoic, with a touch of flamboyancy (based on the behind the scenes photos of the performers).

The Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, two of the most iconic places to visit when you come to Sydney.

Attending a concert with such a strong English tradition meant that I was excited to experience a potential night of Prep. I did see older Gents wear tweed, a few cardigans, club ties and from what I saw one bow-tie (pre-tied of course, what a let down!).

I wanted to project a crisp image of the Gentleman today, simple suit with little accessories, but ones that showed a bit of character and to complete the look; the white stretch shirt from Calibre does the trick for me, hopefully I'll post more on this shirt another day as it has a few interesting details (i.e. both buttons and a zipper).

When I decided to change this picture from colour into black and white I had no idea of what the consequences would be- in this case it happened to be good ones! Old school suaveness, depicting various styles and cultures from the past.

Inspired by The Sartorialist's current book signing in Japan, I've decided to pull out some photos of my trip to Tokyo in both 2008 and 2009.

What an experience it was! To be honest, thinking back, my first trip in August 2008 definitely shaped and contributed a lot to the way in which I choose to experience men's style today, I will never forget seeing the combination of young men in Comme Des Garcons, Nike hi-top sneakers up against dapper businessmen styled in Tom Ford, Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren!

Earlier tonight I was struggling to find inspiration for my blog, back in July 2009 when I first started The Male Umbrella, I promised that in order to keep the blog alive and well I would only post when I have something worthwhile to say.

Tonight I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I would say about men's style and my inspiration during April 2010, although the message I want to convey is still unclear, I know that in weeks to come the task is simple. Keep my ears and eyes wide open! Inspiration to me comes in the form of going about my everyday life. When I go to work, I'll do the usual rounds of the shopping centre looking into Arthur Galan, Calibre and Ralph Lauren. When I'm in the city, I'd people watch and compare their style and lifestyle to those who walk the streets in Tokyo and Hong Kong, or count those who seem to be influenced by The Sartorialist more and more and when I'm at University it's usually a constant struggle in trying to dress appropriately for class (which means minus the bow tie) or accessorising to ensure that the last thing on is the first thing noticed.

Men's style is an on-going process, it's who I am and a way of conveying to others my values and views of the world. What is important to keep referring back to is that FASHION is not my career ambition, therefore I shouldn't insist on taking photos of strangers in the streets or splashing photos of each season's runway show of the major fashion houses. THIS blog, The Male Umbrella, is just another way of self expression and admiration for those style icons around me.

In renewing my vows to this blog I give you my inspiration for April 2010, Morris Stockholm, may their interpretation of prep fashion overwhelm your senses and may their use of pastels make you laugh, smile and reminisce to the sounds of The Beach Boys!

With the start of the Australian winter around the corner.. I'd rather be here!

Loving the contrast in colour and style! the chocolate coloured suit has been a current favourite of mine as of late and I think the pin stripe has been worked in so well to stay current with the changing nature of men's style.

After pondering much about 'where to now?' in terms of the nature of themaleumbrella blog, I think I'll use this photo as inspiration to STAY appreciative of well constructed tailored pieces; the essence of the gentleman!

Tomato Sauce & Mustard

The look created today was inspired by a whole range of people and styles. The plain white v-neck t-shirt tucked into black denim with a tan belt was 1960s 'greaser' inspired, especially seeing 'Carlos' in Tom Ford's 'A Single Man' work the look so well. but let's get into the top half of the outfit, which is the focus of today's post and rightly so as it is the only thing you guys can really see!

This Winter in Australia, the reds and burgandy have been making a comeback in menswear, whether it is through a simple scarf, tie or hoodie, in this case, i've gone for SABA's 'Moleskin' Jacket (which in fact is really just a cotton blazer). The jacket was inspired by the 80s, hence the sharp shoulders and up close, the collar is textured and has a matte finish. The hankerchief is Ralph Lauren Purple Label and was worked in for a bit of colour and prep. Who knew red and yellow could compliment each other so well? and how will each of you work these colours into your own outfits?

Paired Up: The Classic Polo & Knit Tie

Ever wonder what your Polo would look like worn with a tie? well here it is! I wanted to make this an easy transition which meant matching the fabric and textures, hence the knit tie! This is a combination that doesn't look over the top, but it's updated, preppy chic! However, bringing this sort of innovation to the office may not be welcomed with open arms! Instead this look is best left for a day of afternoon drinks in the city, a more transitional period of the day where you want to look relaxed and effortless yet maintain a certain degree of professionality.

These Ralph Lauren shorts of mine purchased around the end of 2009 have served me well all summer! They're definitely one of a kind shorts which means I wear them all the time- so here they are shot by a new camera of mine!

Tropfest on Sunday night proved to be more about eating, drinking and enjoying the company of great friends! On the left you will see me photographed wearing some pastel colours as a way to pay tribute to a wonderful Summer that is slowly drawing to an end! Nothing too complicated just a baby pink and white check shirt with a pair of light blue cotton/hemp shorts from SABA- Sometimes I get told that I will only be able to wear such colours while I am still young- to be honest, I hope I never give this style up, nor the colours that come with it!

Excitement For Winter: Gloves To Replace Handkerchief

What makes winter so special apart from being able to experiment with layers of conventional and unconventional style? Gloves in the breast pocket!

Having a look at Scott Schuman's February Milano photo's I came across a man he shot wearing a peacoat with a scarf that hid every layer worn underneath, then in his breast pocket was not a pocket square, but his leather Gloves! After some more digging of photos in the past, I came across The Sartorialist doing the very same thing! So simple, yet so exciting! Just another way to convey the timelessness of Gentlemen's fashion!

Shall We Dance?

Tucked underneath my hotel were two stores on different levels that catered for gentlemen who needed an outfit for anything from ballroom dancing to formals. There were a lot of patent leather two toned shoes, red satin bow ties and white ruffled shirts to cater for those special occasions. The store was immaculate and I had a great sense of deja vu as the window display was very similar to the D&G one I bloged about in my 'Hong Kong This Coming Week' post.

Off The Streets: Hong Kong

This man was spotted during my Yum Cha breakfast! I think the way he carries himself shows a lot of masculinity as well as being happy and comfortable in his own skin!

The real highlight of the photo is indeed his white socks! Now even I remember during high school: teachers outlawed the mixing of white socks with our traditional school uniform- which in turn, has made it so that even when I did start getting into men's style, white socks with suiting was made to appear as if it was the biggest mistake a man could make! So then, why not break down all these pre-concieved notions of what is and what is not accpetable in terms of style, after all isn't style all about being individualised, innovative and inspiring? Fair to say I am indeed thinking too deeply into this, this man most likely wears his white socks because it is comfortable (thicker, longer lasting for long working hours) and because he thinks no one will ever see behind his desk..... (oh how he was wrong!). At the end of the day I love his effortless nature, perfect example of how daggy Hong Kong businessmen are now some of the most stylish men i've seen!

Hong Kong This Coming Week!

Am I excited? Very, has watching 'Up In The Air' made flying all the more easy for me? NO!

I'll have to be in at Sydney International Airport in a few hours, but not without one last Male Umbrella post!- Just reflecting on the past week I thought at the end of the post i'd share a picture from last weekends celebrations! It was for my mate's (Patrick) 21st! (What am I wearing you might ask?: Arthur Galan Shirt, SABA Black Skinny, SABA pants, Aquilla Shoes)

What am I packing for Hong Kong? Temperatures are about 14-19 degrees celsius, so I have packed a few shirts that are nice on, and even better in case things get messy, as well as a few basic v-neck sweaters for layering! Have packed a pair of rubber sole slip on loafers for a more dressy look and top this off with a light scarf and a electric blue cardigan, and I'm ready to go off to HK in search of anything TOM FORD, ZARA, H&M and RALPH LAUREN. Hopefully i'll buy sensibly whilst taking in the culture of the beautiful Country my parents used to call home!

On a final note, to really get me in the mood (to travel and shop) I have to thank Joanna and Rowena for taking the time to take a picture and send me the photo of the D&G window display they came across during a recent trip to Taiwan. Good choice ladies! (N.B. Such a glamourous display, the bow ties speak for themselves whilst the updated smoking jacket and the shawl like slim lapelle is breath taking! I just realised how much of D&G I see in Tom Ford's collection- makes me think who is influencing who? )

"Up In The Air" Starring George Clooney

Yesterday I went to see George Clooney in "Up In The Air" which was a great film! I won't go into too much detail as the purpose of this post was to reflect on the subtleties of Clooney's costumes.

He was styled in dark suits with the occasional winter coat for most of the film, except for a couple of scenes where he was waterside, in which he wore a sky blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up with a nice pair of light brown chinos.

Clooney's red tie (pictured above) appears throughout the film- Clooney, a man who deals with downsizing organisations, allows the red to be more soothing or a less intimidating detail, but at the same time if he was about to give a talk at a conference, the red helps position himself as the guest speaker quite easily- someone charismatic and confident!

The poka dot tie (pictured) is again a little dandy, but at the same time it's a very classic piece. It should be noted that during the film Clooney always had a small knot tied, the small knot apart from appearing more sincere also helps the tie sit right on a particular collared shirt, also if the tie is a thick material then a windsor knot just won't do.

This was the first movie in which I drew parallels of Clooney and Cary Grant, both are so much a like, Clooney is well and truly today's modern gentleman!

Scarves & Pocket Squares

It's still summer, but at work today I kept things pretty neutral in colour and tone, perhaps at the back of my mind I was thinking about the idea of 'life after colour' or realistically when I start my career where I will not be able to add colour to every outfit! (this of course probably came about from yesterday's Martin Place to The Rocks walk during peak hour, and yes! I'd say that is where my inspiration today came from).

1. The scarf could very well been worn out, especially if I incorporated a light knit, however when I am on the floor things can get a little sweaty so I wanted an outfit that was fairly durable. the scarf tucked in as a neckpiece adds a bit of European flair to an otherwise minimalistic outfit.

2. The bottom photos shows the me in my light grey blazer, what I was experimenting with here was the idea that the pocket square can potentially out trump the tie in terms of effortless style and elegance, therefore I decided to show off one of the many pocket squares I recently purchased with left over gift vouchers from Christmas! Here I did the flat fold of the pocket square which I think complements the outfit perfectly, meaning the verdict indeed shows that the pocket square is a full house!

The Summer Trench

Happy New Year!

Looking at the top half of the outfit, many could say I was going for a 'will.i.am futuristic' theme- through the contrast of the white trench and shirt up against the shimmer of the red check tie as well as the glasses and big hair!

However it just so happened that I was doing the everyday preppy look and threw of the white trench because of the dodgy weather, furthermore I just really wanted to wear the trench out because I believe it is such a cool piece to have, one that would turn heads in Sydney. Boat shoes were worn purely because of the fact that I didn't want to wear out any of my black lace ups at work, and it just so happens the juxtaposition of the classy white trench and boat shoes turned out for the best!
(N.B. only after completing this entry did i notice my SABA tie looks like the tie from the Tom Ford photo on the main header of 'The Male Umbrella'.)

Fingers crossed that the new year brings me a lot more inspiration to write, a better eye for style and a few more followers of 'The Male Umbrella'!

Christmas- What A Time To Work In Retail!

The lead up to Christmas in retail usually means customers will only fall short of spitting in your face! anything else goes... So why not just take a step back from all the crowds and bullshit and indulge in a bit of dress up?

The Ralph Lauren Knit Tie is the focus today. A new purchase of mine, My mindset was to achieve resort, preppy, chuck bass and sophisticated! would you believe the shirt I am wearing underneath the black suit jacket is really short sleeve?

So picture me in this very outfit walking along the beach in white chinos with a Paul Smith Manbag in one hand, and my leather sandals in the other!)

Pick Pocket

1. A colourful pocket square during the day allow for traditionally formal pieces such as suit jackets to be more relaxed without losing any formality,

2. whilst a pocket square at night can compliment that knit tie and velvet sportscoat paying the ultimate tribute to the textures of your outfit.

3. Finally pair up a pocket square with your favourite blazer on top of a shirt without a tie to jazz up the overall outfit- Pocket squares are the finishing touch to gentleman's style.

Meeting The Sartorialist At His Book Signing In Sydney 2009

What an experience! Had a awesome chat with Scott, mainly about my cravat and his pocket square, which is exactly how it should have been!

The book signing was from 6-9, I arrived a little before 6 and watched the lines grow and grow all the way down the block in Paddington. On the way out the sky was dark as there was a storm brewing, the final shot below is a sneaky shot I took from my car driving off with my freshly signed book and the memory of meeting Scott Schuman!

Blurring The Lines Between Past And Present

Look around and tell me how can we tell whether or not someone is dressed like James Dean for a costume party, or because that is his natural style, or next time you go to a bar, tell me how do we spot the office Christmas with the theme 'Gossip Girl' to a group of people who generally have a keen eye for fashion?

My point is- Fashion constantly is being brought back and revived, only a few years ago, A man wearing a navy over coat with gold buttons would've been questioned, but now he is acknowledged for his sartorial choice.

So here we have it... these three photos today... Dandy's of the past? far from it.........shot this year by David Sokosh, it was for an editorial for the New York Times exploring the very issue being discussed in today's post.

Photographed on Governor's Island, NY, many of the items of clothing featured, is worn by men on a regular basis all over the world, bow ties, check suits like the jacket I wore on my last post.......it's all timeless, the only out there photo is perhaps the photo below, of the three gentleman in the top hats- but then even in trying to portray the 19th century, you can't not applaud the way they convey such a fashion forward image!

The Colour Red- rich, can represent lust or passion, but when it comes to clothes, perhaps it's just a way of using colour to brighten up an outfit.

SABA Check Suit Jacket- A little bit dandy, a little bit english prep, oh fuck it! don't over think it and just throw it all together!

Paul Smith Black Tie- With the mindset of "everyone will be wearing black skinny ties", I decided for the more appropriate and much more bolder choice, manipulating the difference in colours and patterns.

Cross The 't's' And Dot Those 'i's'

More often than not, people write to their favourite men's fashion magazine only to ask 'how can I broaden my sartorial choice when it comes to my working wardrobe?' or 'how can I pull off the bow tie without looking overly pretentious/out of place?'- Put quite simply, by experimenting with colour and texture of shirts and accessories, you are more likely to make that subtle adjustment needed in order for fellow colleagues to embrace/accept your own personal tweaking of everyday office wear.

Most of the time it is also industry dependant, for example, if your bank manager wore a knit tie how would you feel? as opposed to an architect or even a teacher/educator.

Have fun with your everyday wardrobe! play with colour and texture, invite others in with your personal grooming and appearance which in turn may help you land that big deal or let it become a conversation starter for the pretty girl who catches your same train!

The Cricket Jumper

Ralph Lauren this past week has really made my style appetite pursue the modern, updated preppy look! The cricket jumper is one of them! Traditionally worn as cricket or tennis attire, the cricket jumper today, can add another dimension to your outfit as it is a subtle statement of traditional prep- accessorise with a bow tie and the right shirt you're adding your own distinct flair to the outfit.

Apart from the dressed up preppy look, the cricket jumper can be worn on its own with a pair of chinos rolled for a more relaxed approach to an afternoon-going into dinner outing!

Wear a variation of the Cricket Jumper and tailor it to your own personality and style, however preppy or edgy you may be! The reason why the jumper works so well in this photo is because it resembles its older brother (the cricket jumper) and because of the contrast of ivory and black, the black detailing is just that much more sleek!

Thom Browne Influences- NYC, Pants hemmed at Thom Browne! To me what really caught my eye was the nature of the hemming, It's hemmed above the ankle making the cuffed look permanent and appearing not forced, but effortless and natural to his style. It's a modern, fresh look which illustrates the way in which he loves to wear the suit, the clothes should never wear you!

Waking up on a Saturday morning for work, had mixed emotions, would've loved to sleep in, on the other hand- another day at work means another day styling others! Just a few minutes ago on The Sartorialist, the first picture that came up was a 'male umbrella' man, so chic with his grey suit hinting at subtle power. The part of the outfit that really stands out though is the tiny tie clip for the skinny tie! It's such a modern suit on a middle aged man, perhaps its by band of outsiders? also his pocket square is cut off nicely, it could well even be a piece of paper, like another Sartorial photo i've posted in the past! Here is the man who tucks his tie into his pants in all its glory! Note: his personal grooming- the slicked back hair and stubble as well as his glasses completes the outfit!

Today I purchased a new pocket square and a pair of red suspenders. Pictured is how I styled the pocket square with a waistcoat for everyday casual wear, effortless preppy, effortless style. My inspiration came from the fact that here in Aus, it was Melbourne Cup Day, everyone was dressed in race day outfits and since it was a scorcher of a day I thought i'd find something in between that shows a bit of character without having to suit up. Topshop

So it took until October 2009, but Topshop finally arrived to Australia. Mixed reactions to tell you the truth. The times I've been overseas the thing that always stuck with me is the fact that Topman didn't really do it for me. On the plus side it's innovative, stylish and classic, and AFFORDABLE; but on the other hand their men's suiting is looking a bit femine.

Tom Ford will back me up on this but anytime a man wears a jacket thats sits too high up and shows a bit of ass, makes the suit look more femine! I did however purchase two pairs of dress pants, one is a grey slim suit pant with black piping at the waist, the second is a cotton/elastane mushroom coloured pant that you can dress up or down! At the end of the day, Yes we're moving in the right direction... Welcome to Australia, But like most cases, menswear will be shafted resulting in the greater success with womenswear...
